Bionic reading doesn't work. ADHD readers use it anyway
A 2024 study found bionic reading doesn't improve reading speed or comprehension. Here's why so many ADHD readers say it helps anyway.
The first time I saw bionic reading, the bold letters looked like a printing error. Then someone in an ADHD forum swore it was the only format that let them finish a chapter without rereading the same line four times, and I understood the appeal immediately, before I understood whether it actually worked.
It does not, according to the one study that has actually tested it under controlled conditions. And it is still one of the most recommended reading hacks in ADHD spaces online. Both of those things are true at once, and the gap between them is more interesting than either fact on its own.
What bionic reading actually is
Bionic reading bolds the first few letters of each word, on the theory that your eyes only need to catch the bolded fragment and your brain fills in the rest. It was invented in 2016 by Renato Casutt, a Swiss typographic designer, who traced the idea back to a college project where he struggled to read a text written in Swiss dialect and started experimenting with visual shortcuts through a word. By the early 2020s it had spread as a browser extension, a Kindle-adjacent formatting trick, and a recurring recommendation in ADHD and dyslexia communities, usually framed as a way to read faster with less effort.
The pitch has a clean internal logic. Skilled readers do not process every letter of every word individually; a lot of word recognition happens in parallel, using shape and a handful of anchor letters. If that is true, then artificially marking the anchor letters should, in theory, speed the process up. It is a reasonable hypothesis, and the controlled test of it didn’t hold up.
What the science actually says
In 2024, cognitive scientist Joshua Snell ran the test that bionic reading’s popularity had outrun for years. Thirty-two participants read a set of paragraphs, half in bionic formatting and half in standard text, while researchers tracked both reading speed and comprehension.1 There was no measurable difference, not even a small one that fell short of significance. Reading time was the same. Comprehension accuracy was the same. Practice with the format didn’t move the needle either, so this wasn’t a case of people needing more exposure before the benefit showed up.
The eye-tracking data is the part that actually explains why. The theory behind bionic reading assumes your eyes can skip the un-bolded letters and your brain reconstructs the word from the fragment. Eye movements don’t support that. Readers’ eyes still traveled across the full word, bolded portion and all, the same way they do in ordinary text. The brain read the whole word, every time, at the same pace it always does. The bolding didn’t remove any of the actual work of reading. It just changed what the page looked like while that work happened.
That is about as clean a null result as reading research produces, and it lines up with the same conclusion mid-tier coverage of the format has landed on elsewhere: the trick looks smart, and the evidence isn’t there.
So why does it still feel like it works
Here is the part the study can’t fully explain, because it wasn’t testing for it: a format can feel easier to use without actually being faster or more accurate, and that gap between felt ease and measured performance is not unique to bionic reading. Psychologists call it processing fluency, the subjective sense of how effortful a mental task feels, and it is well documented that this subjective sense doesn’t reliably track objective performance.2 A clearer font, a nicer layout, or in this case a page with visual structure imposed on it can all make a task feel smoother even when a stopwatch shows no difference. Feeling helped and being helped are measured separately, and they don’t always agree.
For an ADHD reader specifically, that felt-ease signal might be doing real work, just not the work bionic reading is marketed for. One reader described it as giving “external impulses to keep reading,” like an alarm that goes off every time your eyes start to drift off the line. That is not a speed claim or a comprehension claim. It’s an attention claim, and a much more plausible one. A page of plain text offers your eyes nothing to grab onto if your attention wanders mid-sentence. A page with visual rhythm built into it, bold, unbold, bold, unbold, gives your eyes something to catch on when they come back. The format may not be making anyone read faster. It may be making it easier to notice you’ve stopped reading, which for an ADHD brain that loses the thread constantly is a genuinely different and genuinely useful thing.
This tracks with what actually helps ADHD readers stay with a book: most of the effective strategies aren’t about processing text faster. They’re about giving a wandering attention something to hold onto, whether that’s a second sensory channel, a physical fidget, or in this case a visual anchor running down the page. Bionic reading is very plausibly doing that job, just not the job printed on the label.
What this means if you’re deciding whether to use it
Skip it if your goal is reading faster or absorbing more per minute. The one controlled test that exists says it does neither, and the actual research on reading speed doesn’t leave much room for a formatting trick to outperform ordinary attention and practice. If a website is selling bionic reading as a speed-reading method, that specific claim isn’t holding up.
Try it if your problem is staying anchored to the line, not processing speed. There’s no controlled study on that particular benefit yet, positive or negative, so the honest answer is that nobody has tested it. But it costs nothing to find out for yourself: convert a chapter, read it, and notice whether you actually finish it with fewer rereads, not whether it feels sophisticated while you’re doing it. Trust the outcome over the sensation.
